About CEL DryVent® Weather Caps

The CEL DryVent® was designed and developed in 2011 in collaboration with National Grid Gas. Chase Engineering invested in its design, development, tooling, and testing to meet National Grid Gas's goal of reducing hazards associated with venting natural gas and preventing water ingress. This product complies with the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) and is endorsed by National Grid Gas, included in their relevant policy document.

Rugged and Cost-Effective Design

The CEL DryVent® aims to provide a rugged, cost-effective solution for 7-bar vent termination, preventing water ingress while enabling the upward dispersion of vented gas. Designed to mimic the gas dispersal profile of an ‘ideal’ vertical full bore pipe, the product also meets requirements for being non-metallic, fire-resistant, and made from recycled materials.

Key Features of CEL DryVent®

  • Dual Deflector Plate Design: Enables upward gas dispersal and water drainage, unaffected by ice blocking the drain slots.

  • Glass Impregnated Plastic: Offers fire-resistance and durability against vandalism.

  • Threaded Metal Socket: Ensures easy, secure attachment with the provided tool.

Test Conclusions

Comprehensive Testing Results

The CEL DryVent® was subjected to an extensive series of tests conducted by GL Industrial Services UK Ltd at Loughborough University. These rigorous tests were designed to evaluate the product’s performance, durability, and compliance with safety standards.

Each test addressed specific aspects of the CEL DryVent®'s functionality, from its mechanical integrity to its ability to disperse gas effectively. The testing procedures ensured that the product met the high standards required for use in gas networks, confirming its reliability and robustness under various conditions:

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modelling

Description

Determined gas dispersion distances compared to IGEM/SR/25 Edition 2 values.

Results

Results showed that gas is effectively pushed upward from the vent deflector plates, achieving dispersion distances similar to those of an ideal vent. This confirms the CEL DryVent®'s capability to safely disperse vented gas in compliance with industry standards.

Visual Inspection

Description

Assessed aesthetics and ruggedness.

Results

The inspection confirmed the pleasing visual design of the CEL DryVent®, ensuring it integrates seamlessly with existing vent stacks. Additionally, it verified the product's ease of retrofitting, making it a practical choice for gas networks.

Mechanical Integrity Tests

Description

Assessed aesthetics and ruggedness.

Results

The CEL DryVent® demonstrated exceptional durability in drop, impact, and pull tests, confirming its robustness and fitness for purpose in harsh environments. This ensures that the product can withstand physical stress without compromising its functionality.

Lab Flow Tests

Description

Assessed product integrity under repeated pressure.

Results

The tests verified that the CEL DryVent® maintains its integrity and performance even under continuous pressure, ensuring reliable operation in real-world conditions. This reinforces the product's suitability for long-term use in gas networks.

Water Ingress Tests

Description

Simulated varying weather conditions.

Results

The CEL DryVent® successfully prevented water ingress during extensive deluge tests at various vent angles, proving its effectiveness in adverse weather conditions. This capability is crucial for maintaining the safety and functionality of gas vents.

Infra-Red Visualisation Tests

Description

Supported CFD modelling results.

Results

Infra-red visualisation tests aligned with the CFD modelling results, providing qualitative confirmation of the product's gas dispersion capabilities. This additional validation ensures that the CEL DryVent® performs as expected in dispersing vented gas safely.
